Thyristors

ThyristorsThyristors are "normally-off" switches that can be triggered "on" by a small current pulse into the gate electrode. Once turned on (or "triggered"), the component then stays in the conducting state even when the gate on-signal is removed. It only returns to the "off" (blocking) state if the current falls below a certain minimum or if the direction of the current is reversed.

Phase Controlled Thyristors

Thyristors are typically used as phase-controlled current valves for AC to DC conversion and vice versa, operating at low frequencies (most often around AC line frequency). In the conducting state, thyristors feature very low losses, making them attractive devices to efficiently control very high currents and energies. All ABB Thyristors are press-pack devices. They are pressed with a relatively high force onto heat-sinks which also serve as electrical contacts to the thyristor terminals. High Power Thyristor

 Fast Thyristors

For applications with frequencies higher than the domestic AC mains supply (e.g. 50 Hz or 60 Hz), thyristors with lower values of tq are required. Fast Thyristors have optimized turn-off parameters and are designed for general power switching applications.

Reverse Control Thyristors
The reverse conducting thyristor (RCT) is differentiating itself from the normal high power thyristor by having an integrated reverse diode. Because of the reverse diode this thyristor is not capable of reverse blocking.

These devices are advantageous where a reverse or freewheel diode must be used. Because the SCR and diode never conduct at the same time they do not produce heat simultaneously and can easily be integrated and cooled together.

Reverse conducting thyristors are often used in frequency changers and inverters.
